Monitoring notes: 2/13/05 Sign knocked down before this date, probably by an eastbound vehicle collision. I removed the box the next day and noticed that only Starlings have used it. I'm now looking for a new home for the box. ![]() ABOVE, LEFT: Kestrel Nest Box that is available commercially as a Wood Duck house. I placed it on the back of a highway sign in Frederick County, MD on 2/10/2002. It is only slighter larger than Kestrels prefer, but they can also use it. It is bolted to a 2x3 and 3 sets of long, doubled, hose clamps were used to attach it. A 1 1/4" clear rubber hose peice was cut length-wise and attached with 2 brass screws onto the top of the box joint to help keep water out (2nd red arrow). Silicone caulking was used over the top of the entrance (1st red arrow). 3 days after heavy rains, it was not damp inside. The entrance has a metal squirrel guard. ABOVE, RIGHT: Banders in VA with the same nest box model. The towel was placed on the entrance as the box was opened to ensure no young would leave prematurely. This earlier version didn't have a metal squirrel guard, was chewed, and then repaired. As a result of either the chewing or the how the seal joins, some rain got in. The nesting material had to be replaced. Also shown is one of the offspring from that VA box being banded. It was slightly stained from the damp floor. |
