10th Kestrel nest box: Plans
(This box was used by a raptor...)

![]() ABOVE: Kestrel Falcon nest box #10: Plans. The bottom of the roof should not extend below 1/2 of or the top of the entrance. It would even be better if the roof bottom was even with the top of the entrance. This prevents the Kestrel or Screech Owl wings from hitting the roof. Use 1/8" kerfs on roof soffits as drip lines. The "toe hold" is the entrance plug cut in half. A 2nd "toe hold" below it would also be nice. Otherwise add 1/8" deep notches below the netrance and/or "toe hold". Don't add a back roof overhang if not mounting box near top of post. If not near top, extend the back about 4-5" above roof top. Use all gavlanized screws & nails. Outdoor silicone waterproofs gaps. A deeper box reduces raccoon predation. Add 5" more to the depth of the sides than I did. Floor is 9 1/8" x 9 1/4" with 1/2" corner cut-outs. Cut out 1/2" 45 degree corners for outer roof corners too. The latter helps keep your head as well as the birds' wings from being injured. A white roof and/or exterior keeps them cooler. ![]() |
