10th Kestrel nest box site   (Plans for this box...)
April 20: Removed it due to land use changes. It's tough to find a good new location.

10th Kestrel Falcon nest box site, Boyds/Dawsonville, MD

ABOVE: 10th Kestrel Falcon nest box site. Mounted in Boyds/Dawsonville, MD along Rt 28 near Rt 107 on 4/20/2002. The site is the 2nd most ideal NEW Kestrel box site I know of in Montgomery County, MD. Screech Owls could also use it...it is close to trees. It has an aluminum perch about 18" above the roof.

10th Kestrel nest box showing raptor pellets and song bird feathers LEFT: 1/4" mesh and Aspen tree savings. The mesh covers the entire bottom and is folded upward to form a 3 1/2" lip. This keeps the wood shavings and babies from falling out when checking the box.

Monitoring notes:
2/2/03 Kestrel on nearby utility lines almost daily for about 2 weeks.
4/12/03 Winter/Spring usage as roost & eating station by Kestrel or Owl. It is even possible a Screech Owl has raised young in there. Some elongated pellets & lots of Bluebird feathers inside. I have never seen a Kestrel on this box. A Starling may have added a layer of hay in the Fall.
