ABOVE, LEFT: 5 babies on 6/8/02 with eyes almost completely open. They were 4-6 days old, had blood on their beak edges, and sparrow feathers were among the nest. ABOVE, RIGHT: This 14' tall nest box, can be hoisted up/down on its pulley system. Perches were added due to lack of nearby hunting perches. LEFT: 3 approx 10 day old babies on 6/1/2003. A possibly sterile Kestrel egg and a few grasshopper legs were also in there. The site is the most ideal NEW Kestrel box site I know of in Montgomery County, MD. Kestrels were seen on nearby utility line twice in the summer & fall of 2000 before the box was built. |

Consice monitoring notes: 7/2000 and 11/2000 Kestrel on adjacent utility line. 9/20/01 Kestrel box #1 mounted. 6/8/02 Found 5 baby Kestrels during physical inspection of the box. 6/1/03 Found 3 baby Kestrels during physical inspection of the box. 7/04 My rough guess is that some babies fledged from this box this summer. 6/28/05 Kestrel seen in box, babies will probably fledge from this box this summer.
