Kestrel Nest Box Construction

On 8/22/2001 when these photos were taken I had not yet erected any Kestrel nest boxes except in the testing area shown in these photos.

All photos by John C., 2001 in Dickerson, MD unless otherwise noted.

Nest Box #1
First Nest Box: Transporting the 17' post: I didn't have access to a truck so I drilled holes in the pipe and anchored it to the chair supoorts with wire. The red safety flag was also secured with wire and 2nd flag was tied to the top of the trunk. The post was kept from further shifting by placing 2 sand bags on it's center. The trip home was almost 90 min and some of it was on a 4 lane highway in stop-and-go traffic.

Nest Box #1 First Nest Box: Close up of front: Shows plastic 1/2" tips on the perches to keep rain water out. (The diagonal line at the top center is a guy wire for another unrelated structure.)

Nest Box #1 First Nest Box: Close up of back: Shows mounts. Segments of a larger pipe were used and then further secured with 2" EMT conduit brackets. On the right side of the bottom mount you can see the locking pin which keeps the box from swaying in the wind. This needs to be placed and removed by using a large step ladder.
