Snake-resistant Southern Flying Squirrel nest box plans

The idea for these plans came from this "Squirrels and Bluebirds" Message Forum posting (I have posted a copy of the posting to my web site, in case the original posting is ever removed). I didn't use plans but instead just followed the description of this style from Tyler, Texas in the 1930's. From that description I built the house and mounted it on a tree with copper wire. The plans pictured above were drawn after the house was made. It's 2-entrance design prevents snakes from eating more than one squirrel because while one is being eaten, the others can escape. If it only has one entrance, an entire family of Flying Squirrels can be eaten. Always use a steel portal to prevent woodpeckers and Gray Squirels from enlarging the holes and entering the box. I often see woodpeckers using the additional resonating properties of these nest box portals (when pecked) for their territorial "drumming". This annoys the box occupants but doesn't harm the box.
