Flying Squirrel house #8
Photos by John C., 2003 in Dickerson, MD. Flying Squirrel house #8 on 2nd day of roost usage
LEFT: 9/12/2003 photos of Flying Squirrel house #8, which was placed on a Black Oak Tree on August 31, 2003. In the close-up, the occupant's nose is visible. It is 20' from the Flying Squirrel feeder. On Sept 8, I noticed that a piece of straw I put in the entrance was moved. This happened for 2 more days but the box was still empty. Then, on the evening of Sept 11, a Flyer poked its head out just after sunset. It watched as I filled their feeder and my dogs barked at each other just below it.

Monitoring notes:
8/31/2003 Mounted nest box.
9/8-10/2003 Some of box contents was disturbed, but no Flyers were in it.
9/11/2003 Flyer looking out of the entrance after sunset.
9/14/2003 Two or more Flyers take turns looking out of entrance after sunset. Having more than one
in the same box might mean that breeding season is over and winter prepping has begun.
9/15/2003 Possibly two or more Flyers look out of entrance after sunset.
9/20/2003 No Flyers since 9/15. Matted nesting material was in box.
