5 Flyers in the feeder5 Flyers in the feeder. 5 Flyers entered the feeder on a windy evening after the leaves were off of the trees. It is not easy to pick out each one. (red arrows point to their heads)
4 Flyers in the feeder4 Flyers in the feeder. After a night of the least activity ever, 4 Flyers entered the feeder for the first time. It was a very rainy night. The one at the top right could be a baby. (red arrows point to their heads)

Looking, listening at ledge entranceLEFT: Looking, listening at ledge entrance.
The Flyers seem to like this entrance design and spend a lot of time looking out of it. I'm guessing that much of the time spent there is when they are watching a house cat directly below on the ground. I see these stray farm cats every day and night. The Flyers don't seem to mind when dogs are below the feeder. They only rarely watch the dogs.

Any dirt or food crumbs the Flyers leave behind while up there slide downward and fall out of the chute at the lower end of the ledge. In the far left center of the photo, the nose of a Flyer entering from the side wall entrance is visible. The top of the divider was painted a flat black color to reduce glare.

A Starling enters feeder, eats, breaks water bottle, and removes foodLEFT: A Starling enters feeder, eats, breaks water bottle, and removes food. The 2" diameter side entrance was blocked to stop this. Apparently on the the previous day, the Starling broke the water bottle. Fortuntely it was a clean break and no sharp peices fell off.

Damage-resistant water bottleLEFT: Damage-resistant water bottle. This water bottle is mounted on the outside of the feeder. A hole was drilled in the box for the spout to go through feeder box wall. The aluminum water spout is accessed by the Flyers from within the feeder. This allows for easier refilling and it doesn't take up room inside of the feeder.

In the future I might connect the 2 side entrances with PVC pipe so they have a secure tunnel between the 2 boxes. I'll do a lot of laughing if this happens and they use it.

Drinking from water bottle and holding it with right handLEFT: Drinking from water bottle and holding it with right hand. Its head it tilted 90 degrees to the left. So far they've mostly been using it while they are upside down.

Figuring out how to get the WalnutFiguring out how to get the Walnut. They prefer Walnuts that have already been cracked open like these. This Flyer appears to be molting as evidenced by the grizzly fur on its left side.

Entering at top entrance - head firstEntering at top entrance - head first. Another Flyer that might have some food in its mouth checks to see if the entering Flyer is a friend or not.

Chewing on mineral spool in feederChewing on mineral spool in feeder. The mineral spool, which resembles a salt-lick wheel, is hanging between the upper food tray and the lower food tray so it is not in full view. This spool should provide vitamins which could possibly help the thinning fur on the tails of some of the Flyers.

Stayed in feeder for a day and climbed around a lotOne Flying Squirrel stayed in the feeder for a day and climbed around a lot. It spent about 50% of its time looking out of the entrance.

Stayed in feeder for a day to sleepDuring this day spent in the feeder it did get some sleep.

Eating a Hazelnut in an unusual positionEating a Hazelnut in an unusual position. They gnaw tooth-holds into the nuts and then carry them out of the feeder to eat or store them elsewhere. All of their nightly supply of in-shell Hazelnuts and Pecans are removed from the feeder by them. On rare occasions, so are some of the in-shell peanuts.

Monitoring notes:
9/29/03 Flyer chews floor & walls, brings in 2 grass strands, and pushed food dish aside.
