Flying Squirrel Feeder Cam
"Is the small-tailed, grizzly, furred one a baby?"

Photos by John C in Dickerson, MD 2003

BACKGROUND:

1) These were all taken at night, after a day that a large male Flyer stayed in the feeder to sleep.
2) This was the most active night in the feeder...ever.
3) A male seems to stay at the top guarding, while a small-tailed, hispid/grizzly-furred, darker one stays at the bottom.
4) The small-tailed, grizzly-furred one even seems to rest or sleep at the bottom of the feeder.
5) They squeaked more in the subsequent night than any other.

The photos were triggered by motion-detection so I didn't see them until the next morning.

cam-03_Jul_14_02.44.55.jpgcam-03_Jul_14_02.44.55.jpg: The male went back and forth all night guarding the entrance and then eating at the bottom or checking on the grizzly-furred one or leaving. (Grizzly-furred one in shadow at bottom)

cam-03_Jul_14_03.06.09.jpgcam-03_Jul_14_03.06.09.jpg: The small-tailed, grizzly-furred one looks like it was resting/sleeping here too. Its head seems rounder than most Flyers' heads. I haven't seen one with a head like this since December.

cam-03_Jul_14_04.16.05.jpgcam-03_Jul_14_04.16.05.jpg: Note the grizzly fur.

cam-03_Jul_14_04.16.55.jpgcam-03_Jul_14_04.16.55.jpg: Note the small but thick-furred tail.

cam-03_Jul_14_04.22.42.jpgcam-03_Jul_14_04.22.42.jpg: The grizzly-furred one looks awkward eating from the rectangular dish, as if it doesn't know how. Maybe it is resting. None of the Flyers have been positioned like this before that I've seen.
