ABOVE, LEFT: Bluebird Box #1: It was 2nd box on this pole.
It was replaced with a 3rd box which is labeled "2003 Downy roost" in the photo,
and then it became Box #2.
In front yard, 20' from rd. In March 2003 a 3rd box was added
so Chickadees, a Downy Woodpecker, and possibly Bluebirds could use them all.
If Tree Swallows start competing for these boxes....a 4th one might be added.

Moss found in box 2b and 2 but only a few pcs in box 2.
Nest appeared half complete and 1-1/8" metal portal added on 4/15/2003.
Several eggs on 4/26, mother was not brooding them yet.
Several babies on 5/14 but too cold out to count them.

Downy woodpecker chipped off parts of entrance and was seen using it
as a roost when observation began in Jan 2003. Original gable Box replaced
with a larger version on 2/16/2003.

New box added 8/01. A 1 1/8" metal portal was placed on the entrance to stop House Sparrow attacks.
This also stopped a Downy Woodpecker from entering it at dusk.
3 eggs found under the top 1" of nest. Couldn't tell their temp...it was 90 F out.
On 4/30 found 6 eggs. They seemed warm. Checked box on 5/9 and the mother flew into it as
I approached. She stayed in there as I checked the babies. They didn't grow much bigger in 5 days.
They've been chirping softly since they were born. On 5/19 I only saw 5 babies and they seemed
figity in their now cramped space.
On 5/25 when cleaning out nest...only a few blowfly pupae were found in it.
Also removed Chickadee portal so entrance is 1.5" wide.

| Overall notes:
May 25 a raisin/mealworm feeder was added close by for the Bluebird parents.
No apparent predators caused problems but the remaining nest was infested with mites and was removed on 6/5. The box
was then treated with a mild bleach and water solution. On 6/11 one baby was seen in a tree. On 6/12 a baby was seen catching a bug. On 6/13 the mother was feeding 2 babies and renesting again. On 6/17 all 5 babies seen on feeder with mother.

May 18 I checked to see if more eggs were laid but I could not see the eggs well so I felt for them
with my hand. I felt something warm in the nest but it was not the eggs...it was the mother. She did not move
and peeked out of the entrance for about 5 minutes afterwards.
