Nuthatch nest  (in Flying Squirrel nest box #1)

7 larger Nuthatch babies aimed towards entrance for easier feeding
Photos by John C., 2003 in Dickerson, MD.
Nuthatch baby on 5/7/2003 ABOVE: 7 larger Nuthatch babies aimed towards the entrance for easier feeding on 5/7. They snapped their beaks at me every time I moved. This time the parents made a slight alarm call which was a faint whistle. The babies answered back the same way and then all wiggled a bit. The parents did keep their bugs during this time.

LEFT: Close-up of a baby on 5/7.

Approx. 16-day old babies on 5/10/2003 LEFT: Approx. 16-day old babies on 5/10. The parents were concerned that I was checking the box and ate the bugs they had. The babies were sensitive to even the slightest noise I made. They jolted with each unintentional noise I made while I was 10' high on the ladder. These are the last in-nest photos I'll take of them because they're getting jumpier and could leave the nest prematurely if I check them on subsequent days. 5/14: The approx 20 day old babies still in nest, being fed, and trying to get out. Don't know how many. On or by 5/15 all of them fledged. On 5/22, several of the plump young birds were seen on various tree trunks the eating on their own. On 5/24, one baby found dead under a tree near wire fence and saw parent feeding another baby.
