Bad news about Carolina Wrens...
Carolina Wren nest in Bluebird feeder, July 2003.
The feeder was moved to a temporary location and just as I was ready to move it again,
I found the nest inside of it so I left it alone.
There used to be 6 eggs in it but
I'm guessing the nearby non-native House Sparrows destroyed them by breaking
their necks and removing them from the nest.
On July 11 only one very fat baby remained.
On July 13 it was gone...all the babies were killed.
Past successful nestings: June 2003: Neighbor's window AC unit, July 2002: My window AC unit,
July 2001, in a hanging plant under my house eave.

.. Good news about Carolina Wrens...
Carolina Wren nest in anti-Starling device, August 16, 2003.
The device has a section of duct-work removed from it,
leaving the rear opening
accessible to the Wrens. The harmless device could capture Starlings but
cannot capture the Wrens.
Starlings are a non-native bird that kill many native animal species,
so the device was made.
There has been no evidence of any type of predation attempts on these Wrens.
The dogs that live near this nest
might unknowingly help protect the Wrens from predators. The dogs were kept
indoors on the the day the babies left the nest, which was 8/18.
