Kestrel/Bluebird/Bat box #4

6th Kestrel Falcon nest box showing supports

ABOVE, LEFT: East-facing Kestrel box in Seneca Creek State Park. CENTER, TOP: Looking west - Seneca Creek Br / Rt 28 in background. CENTER, BOTTOM: The tree had only angled limbs for mounting so a special support frame had to be built. RIGHT: Looking east, are utility lines Kestrels used 2-3x per week in the winter.

6th Kestrel Falcon nest box, entrance restriction for bats & BluebirdsRIGHT: Starlings claimed box and Kestrels did not, so on 5/11 the 3" hole was restricted to a 1 3/16" slot (LEFT). Now only creatures like Bluebirds and bats can use it. The slot will be removed in the Fall so Kestrels can roost in it. Also added 1/8" plastic mesh for bats to cling to (RIGHT).
Monitoring notes:
3/28/02 Kestrel on adjacent utility line, 1st proximity sighting since mounting box.
5/1/02 Kestrel on adjacent utility line facing box, 2nd proximity sighting since mounting box.
6/1/03 House Wren came out of the box. It might have been there again on 7/03.
2004 Box entrance stained, probably from a Nuthatch rubbing a Stink Bug on it.
6/30/05 House Wren dummy nest filled entire box and was on top of an old Nuthatch nest.
