Bat house #8
(next to Bat house #6 & 4 other boxes)
ABOVE: Bat house #8 is a single chambered one.
It is on a non-commercial utility pole the center of a field and near pond and they like roosting in such areas.
The entrance is about 8 1/2' off the ground and the front faces south.
1/8 plastic mesh from OBC (Organization for Bat Conservation) was
attached to over 1/2 of the inside for the bats to cling to.
The mesh extends down to and over the entire landing plate to make leaving
and entering the house easier for the bats.
The house also leans backward a few degrees for easier landing and roosting.
It has closed off attic that has three 1/8" holes for the warm attic air to enter the main chamber.
Since there are no vents to the outside in the main chamber, the bottom half of the house was not painted black
thus providing a cooler area for the bats to crawl to if needed.
It is in the Poolesville area of
Montgomery County, MD, on NIH's property. I am very
grateful to NIH for allowing me to use their campus
for this project.
