Bluebird Nest Box...home to a bat 9/23/2001 Photo of a Bluebird box that a bat lives in at a rural 2-lane road intersection.

When taking measurements of my Bluebird nest boxes to winterize them I was surprised to see a bat in one of the boxes. I was able to take some photos of it before it flew out and over to the underside of a bridge that was about 100 feet away. I think the bat chose to live in here because it's floor is almost 7' high, in the open, near a utility pole, it is wider, and not as deep as the other area bird houses. This wide shape might aid in its being able to be located by the bat's echolocation which it uses for navigation.

If this bat continues to use this nest box I might consider making the entrance smaller so no birds can use it. Another birdhouse would be made next to it so the Bluebirds can still have a home at this location. I would also add plastic 1/8" hardware cloth to the inside walls to make it easier for the bats to climb and hang around in there.

I think its wing may have touched my left hand! Needless to say when that happened I quickly and safely jumped off the step ladder I was standing on.
